Heaven's View Trail Run
1/2 Marathon, 10K and 5K

In the middle of San Francisco Bay sits Angel Island, offering panoramic vistas.

While this is certainly not a flat course, the only real climb is in the first mile, about 636 feet. The 10K mile loop covers the island once with the 1/2 marathoners doing the loop twice. As always the route will be precisely measured for timing accuracy. This run is limited to just 300 people to insure a safe and friendly atmosphere.

Because of the remoteness of the island there will be only two aid stations—one the top of the first climb and the second back at the turn around point for the 1/2 marathon. There will be additional fun and healthy snacks at the finish line.

Take off on an island adventure to the “Jewel of the San Francisco Bay.” Angel Island is a great place to have an unforgettable run. We will circle the island taking in panoramic vistas of the entire Bay at each turn.

With the recent upgrades to the island’s trail system you can now guarantee unobstructed picture-postcard views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco skyline, Marin, and Mt. Tamalpais.

A clear day on the island is referred to as a Five Bridge Day, when along the running trails you can view the Golden Gate, Bay, Richmond/San Rafael, San Mateo and the Dumbarton bridges.

The day starts with a quick 10-minute ferry from Tiburon to the island. We then start the run a few yards from the ship’s landing at Ayala Cove, climbing a winding, single track, covered trail. Where the trail levels off at the top of a gradual ascent you begin your island exploration.

Angel Island is also alive with history. Three thousand years ago the island was a fishing and hunting site for Coastal Miwok Indians. It was later a haven for Spanish explorer Juan de Ayala, a cattle ranch, and a US Army post.

From 1910 to 1940, the island processed thousands of immigrants making it know as the “Ellis Island of the West.” During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were held on the island, which was also used as a jumping-off point for American soldiers returning from the Pacific. In the ’50s and ’60s, the island was home to a Nike missile base.

Today, there are two active Coast Guard stations—at Point Blunt and Point Stuart—on the island. Angel Island became a State Park in 1958.
